Pollution
Air pollution, water pollution. What if you started monitoring around you and pressuring your government into making a difference ? What if you modified habits to prevent damage to the environment?
Science based actions
- Effects of landfill on the environment
- What can you throw away in the sink and toilet ?

Political engagement
Monitor the air pollution around you and report to your government if you are not within the norm !

There are several existing petitions to reduce pollution. The petitions can be issued by individuals such as yourself, or by organisations such as Green Peace. An example is given in the following link:

Landfills
Landfills are use reduce the amount of waste that makes it into the environment, help to prevent disease transmission, and keep communities clean. However, landfills still have significant environmental and social impact.
- they release methane gas, which is a green house gas and a huge contributor to climate change as well as carbon dioxide and water vapor which also contritube to climate change
- for their creation, landfills require large terrains which means destroying natural wildlife habitats. In the USA, over 7300 km^2 are used for landfill.
- landfills are not completely ermetic, which leads to leaks and contamination of water sources and damage to ecosystems. Indeed, landfills form a liquid called leachate, which has high level of ammonia - this produce nitrates which asphyxiate plant life as well as animals.
- the smell and resulting pollution from landfill render living conditions poorly

How to reduce landfills

I. Recycle : it will reduce the amount of waste and thus the need for landfill
II. Avoid single-use plastics
III. Compost : compost does not fully decompose in landfill and landfill can be reduced by composting biodegradable material

Air pollution mitigation
Air pollution affects humans as well as the environments. There are several guidelines recommended to mitigate air pollution, which depend on the stakeholder: citizens, enterprises, and public authorities, of the emission sources (transport, household energy, industry, and energy generation sector, agriculture, and shipping area), and of the field of implementation (urban and extra-urban context). The mitigation strategies or strategic measures proposed are displayed in the table.
